Description: Creating a teaching portfolio is an important way to illustrate the strategies and techniques you use to help support and encourage student learning. It also gives you the opportunity to reflect on your teaching and ways to improve for the future. Not only is this a helpful exercise, but may be a requirement when applying for future employment. This workshop will give you examples and time to discuss how to assemble an electronic teaching portfolio. Requirements for the submission of teaching portfolios from nominees of FSU’s Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award (OTAA) will also be addressed.

Description: Metacognition, “thinking about one’s thinking”, helps students be aware of their own learning. Leading Classroom Discussions
Description: Leading an online group discussion that is productive and engaging can be a difficult task for both new and experienced instructors working in an online format. In this interactive online workshop (offered via Zoom), we will demonstrate useful techniques and strategies to maintain the positive dynamics of group learning while managing time and expectations. First, some basic online discussion strategies will be explored by an experienced online teaching TA. Then, TAs teaching Physics and Biology labs for the first time online will share tips and challenges involved in encouraging online discussion.

Description: When you’re designing tests or quizzes for your course what factors do you take into consideration? Do you ask yourself: Will this test assess if my students are meeting the learning objectives? What about this: How much time will this take to grade? Learning How to Teach Problem Solving through a VR Training Session (PIE/PFF/PFP)
Description: A central portion of education is to teach people to be better problem solvers. In this workshop, you will learn and practice strategies of teaching problem solving to students in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. For beginning TAs and whoever is interested in improving teaching skills, this workshop would provide great opportunities to interact with virtual students and practice teaching anonymously in a simulated classroom. This workshop also gives you an opportunity to experience educational VR, which has been applied in multiple departments at FSU. (Note: The VR intervention is designed as a part of an NSF-funded research project).
